Sustainable Sheep Production – genetic aspects

چکیده
About the authors Dr John Karlsson is a researcher and farmer interested in improving animal production and sustainability via genetic selection. Over the last 30+ years his work has predominantly revolved around optimum production and developing Merino Sheep fit for the local environment including breeding for parasite resistance. Until his recent retirement he was a Senior Veterinary Officer at the Department of Agriculture and Food Western Australia (DAFWA). At DAFWA he initially worked on regulatory disease management programmes and providing general husbandry advice to livestock farmers, this identified research priorities for the local Sheep Industry. His daughter Annika recently completed her undergraduate degree with a double major in Zoology and Agricultural Science, at the University of Western Australia. Her postgraduate Honours degree (2014-2015) is focused on determining a link between potential olfactory cues and flystrike in the Merino sheep. Both Annika and her father are involved in the running of their family sheep farm (‘Majuba’) in Bridgetown, WA.

Genetic aspects of sheep parasitic diseases.
There is evidence of genetically determined host resistance mechanisms for most of the sheep parasites evaluated. The mechanisms vary; from no or reduced establishment, early expulsion, to suppression of parasites resulting in reduced size and fecundity. There is a need to integrate breeding for parasite resistance with the genetic improvement of production traits in farm animals, aiming for op...
متن کاملThe first genetic identification of Theileria ovis subtype KP019206 in sheep in Iran
Ticks and tick-borne diseases, including theileriosis, constitute a major constraint to livestock production. Two species, known as Theileria lestoquardi and Theileria ovis, are suspected to contribute to ovine theileriosis in Iran. However, the epidemiological aspects of ovine theileriosis are poorly understood in this country. In a survey, designed to identify Theileria species in sheep, 52 (...
متن کاملIndigenous Sheep Production in Ethiopia: A Review
Research results and facts of indigenous sheep production were reviewed with the aim of delivering relevant information for the beneficiaries. The common production system used in Ethiopia was the extensive type, which was characterized by small flock sizes and the flock being periodically devastated by diseases. Some indigenous sheep groups of the country were characterized and their names wer...
متن کاملGenetic Relationships among Four Saudi Arabian Sheep Populations
Four Saudi Arabian indigenous sheep populations including Najdi, Hbsi, Arb, and Naemi were genotyped for 16 microsatellite markers recommended by the food and agriculture organization (FAO). This study aims to provide information on the genetic structure of the breeds analyzed and give indications and proposals for the cross breeding program. All loci were polymorphic in all populations and loc...
متن کاملGenomic Selection and the Sheep Cooperative Research Centre (crc) Nucleus Flock
Genomic selection is a new DNA based method of selecting animals for breeding. The test reveals DNA differences between animals for thousands of genetic markers. Prediction of an animal’s genetic merit is based on DNA comparison with a group of reference animals with trait measurements as well as a DNA profile. A sustainable use of genomic selection by sheep breeders requires cheap genotyping c...
